The guys are planning to go out to a bar when the jet finally lands, but not me. All I’ve thought about the entire trip home is the gorgeous woman waiting in my bed. It is all I can do to concentrate on the events of the day.

I’ve been answering the same damn questions in fifty different ways while dumbing things down for those who either don’t understand or don’t want to understand how this program will assist them. It’s as if some don’t want to be able to find criminals and put them away. I don’t dislike non-techy people, I just don’t understand why they find it so hard to understand what we’re trying to do. Thankfully, we have had more success than failure and managed to convince them to grant us more money for the project.

I’d messaged Frank earlier in the day, giving him our landing time, and he’d replied to confirm he’d be there, so I’m a little pissed off when I step off the jet to find Brodie waiting instead. I love my friends, but I don’t want to go out for drinks tonight. I want to go home to my woman.

“Jesus,” Tennison grouses as his phone begins to constantly ping with missed calls and messages as he switches off flight mode.

“Your girlfriends must have missed you, buddy,” Max teases as he switches his phone on too. “What the …” his voice cuts off as his phone goes crazy like Tennison’s, while mine and Ellis’s phones react the same way.

As we step onto the tarmac, I notice that Brodie’s posture is all wrong. Something is off.

“Get in the car.” Brodie’s tone is abrupt and no-nonsense. I open my mouth to ask what’s going on when he interrupts me, shifting his stance slightly to show a weapon tucked under his leather jacket.

“No time for fifty fucking questions, Jay. Just get in the damn car.” We obey as one, everyone silent now, all our attention on Brodie. Without explanation, he dives behind the wheel, tension rolling off him in waves. He starts the car and plants his foot on the gas pedal, leaving the jet behind us in the darkness.

“What the fuck, Bro? Anyone would think you were driving a getaway car,” Ellis grunts, crammed between the other two in the back seat.

“Franks in hospital in an induced coma and Kasey’s missing. I need to get you all to the penthouse, where I know you’ll be safe. Cops will be there soon,” he grates out.

“What are you talking about?” This has to be some stupid prank he’s pulling, and it’s not funny. “I texted Frank this afternoon. He texted back, and I spoke with Kasey this morning. Joke’s over, Brodie.”

When Brodie looks my way, his face is thunderous. “Do I look like I’m fuckin’ joking?” he shouts. “Frank drove Kasey to the doctor this afternoon. A few hours later, the cops arrived at the office to tell me he was in the hospital. Someone found him in a back alley, bloodied, beaten and the car gone, too.
